1865 : James Maxwell’s A Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field

Seeking an alternate explanation to action at a distance, Maxwell defined a medium through which electromagnetic phenomena could be enacted directly. He asserted that this medium must be an elastic, pervasive “ether” not dissimilar to that still maintained in the field of optics. An assortment of novel and useful equations describing electromagnetic phenomena were included.
