1897 : J. J. Thomson’s Discovery of the Electron

Thomson posited the existence of a subatomic particle that carries negative electricity based on a long-known experimental device: the cathode ray tube. He determined the speed, mass, and charge of the particle and notes its ability to penetrate materials the smallest atom cannot as well as its universality. He received the 1906 Nobel Prize for Physics for this discovery.
