1898 : Marie and Pierre Curie’s Discovery of Radioactivity

Upon discovering two new elements, which they dubbed polonium and radium, the Curies introduced a brand new field to physics: radioactivity. The resulting experiments revealed the lucrative possibilities radiation offered to studying subatomic physics and suggested a revision of the fundamental principles of mechanics would likely soon take place.
