1945 : The Manhattan Project

In the thick of World War II, Oppenheimer led a team of scientists to harness the power of nuclear fission to produce a bomb. Many of the most brilliant European minds had fled Europe, and a number joined him in Los Alamos, New Mexico hoping to create one before the Nazis could. Soon after a successful test, nuclear bombs were dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima, bringing a violent end to the war.
